Wakefield overpowers Greater Lawrence

WEST ANDOVER — In a non-league matchup, Wakefield rolled to a 49-0 win over Greater Lawrence in the season opener at Gleason Field. Linebackers Alvin Nunez (9 tackles) and Dominic Colon (8 tackles) played well in defeat. Javious Calderon carried seven times for 51 yards. The Reggies host North Reading in another non-league matchup Friday at 6 p.m.

Salem goes 3-0-1

 

Salem's wrestling team improved to 6-2-1 with three wins and an impressive 39-39 tie with highly regarded Wakefield. Among the Blue Devils who were unbeaten on the day was heavyweight Josh Ozoria, who had four first-period pins.

Titles for Brown, Gangi

 

 CJ Brown won his second tournament in two weeks in impressive fashion and Joe Gangi followed his lead as Methuen finished fourth at the Wakefield Tournament.

Brown (170) and Gangi (138) won all their matches with first period pins with Gangi getting a 35-second fall in the finals. Also for the Rangers, Michael Crowe was the runner-up at 113 while freshmen Jack Stoddard (106) and surprising Josiah Concepcion took thirds.

Andover momentum

Down 26-0 to Wakefield, Andover roared back and pulled out the win 37-29. Heavyweight A.J. Heidtke, who only has been wrestling for three weeks, won by pin in 52 seconds to win it. Coach Mike Bolduc said the big turning points were tough wins by Jonathan Davila at 145 over a WHS captain and by Elias Maita at 160 over the Salem Blue Devil Classic champ.

Raiders bounced in quarters

The No. 12 Central Catholic boys soccer team got off to a slow start and trailed 1-0 at halftime to No. 13 Wakefield, but tied the game up early in the second on a goal from Bobby Bakhtiari. But Wakefield took the lead thanks to a corner kick, and added insurance with a minute left to beat the Raiders, 3-1, in the Division 2 North quarterfinals.

Diaz, Reggies wear down Wakefield

 

WAKEFIELD — Quarterback Shamil Diaz (21-259) and running back Maleek Dejesus (17-124) controlled the clock and Greater Lawrence earned a big season-opening win over Wakefield. The Reggies had the clock approximately 10 minutes on a fourth-quarter drive which didn't result in points but sealed the win.

'Cats lose heartbreaker

Whittier didn't get the breaks Monday in its Division 2 quarterfinal matchup with Wakefield, dropping a tough 2-1 decision to Wakefield.

Matt Michel pitched a gem for the Wildcats, striking out eight while scattering six hits, but Wakefield scored the only runs it needed on a delayed steal and a throwing error.

Knights tennis rolls

No. 8 North Andover boys tennis topped No. 16 Wakefield 4-1 in the Division 1 North quarterfinals. The Knights will next travel to No. 4 Wayland in the North semifinals on Monday (3:30 p.m.).
