SALEM — Holiday tournaments provide a challenging way for teams to jump-start themselves early in their seasons.
Taking on perennial Division 1 power Pinkerton yesterday in the Salem Holiday Tourney, Division 2 Timberlane used a second-period scoring blitz and balanced play for an impressive 5-1 victory.
"A coach can't be any happier with regards to their effort," Owl head coach Ryan Dugan said. "They're working hard and never stop working."
Nursing a 1-0 lead, Timberlane broke loose with two quick goals, growing the advantage to 5-0 with scoring from all three lines before Astro freshman J.D. Dudek broke up the shutout in the third period.
Junior Brendan Heinze and sophomore Brett Boyer scored twice apiece for the Owls with senior Austin Viens adding a solo score.
Dugan praised the play of freshman Cam Toohey, lauding his "speed, forechecking and big body checks." Dugan sacrificed his body early on to break up a 3-on-2 Pinkerton rush when things were still in doubt but suffered an injured wrist requiring a hospital visit in the process.
"This was a big win against an upper-tier team," Toohey said. "It could have gone either way but we got some good bounces in the second period and took advantage."
