No. 3 Salem trailed No. 6 Exeter 2-1 at halftime, but the Blue Devils made the correct adjustments at halftime.
"We need to keep the ball wide and use the alleys more," Salem coach John Gatsas said.
That's exactly what Salem did and it came away with a 3-2 victory in the quarterfinals of the Division 1 field hockey tournament yesterday.
Sarah Frahm's second half goal made it 2-2. Then, Meghan Bench scored the winner with 16:17 left to play.
A shot from the top hit off an Exeter defender's stick and it deflected to Bench, who was standing on right side about eight feet from the goal. She knocked it past the goalie's right side.
"We kept playing aggressive," Gatsas said. "The midfielders and backs kept playing aggressive and attacking their forward line and kept the advantage going our way.
"(Shayla DeRosa and Samantha Gauvain) did a nice job of coming up and pressing Exeter's attackers," he added.
Salem plays Pinkerton in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Thursday at Exeter High.
