SOUTH EASTON — Whittier's effort was far from perfect, but when big plays had to be made last night against a strong Southeastern team, the Wildcats showed their championship pedigree in a come-from-behind 28-22 overtime decision.

The win stretches Whittier's winning skein to 13 games, one of the longest active streaks in Eastern Mass.

Trailing 22-16 in the fourth quarter, senior Jay Desjardins blasted off the wing, blocked a punt at the Southeastern 16, and sprinted to fall on the loose ball in the end zone for the tying score.

And after junior Cam Dubiel broke in front of an open receiver to swat away a potential fourth-down overtime touchdown, the Wildcats recovered from a penalty on their own possession to win on Jack Creesy's 7-yard, third-down scoring run up the middle.

"The line said to Jack, 'Run right up on us,' and no one touched him," Whittier head coach Kevin Bradley said of the game-winning play.

"We lost so much from last year," Bradley said. "We have so many young kids that were just thrown in the fire but they found a way to win the game. Was is a perfect game? Not even close. We have a lot of work to do but they still found a way."

Creesy had two touchdowns on the night and Mark Asemota (85 yards) added another six-pointer.

Defensively, senior linebacker Ryan Shanahan had a game-high 12 tackles.

Whittier steps way up in competition in its home opener Saturday, playing Division 1A Revere.
