SALEM, N.H. — For a first-round tournament game, it wasn’t quite perfect, but it was close enough for senior pitcher Nora Galvin and the No. 2-seed Salem softball team.

Galvin took a perfect game into the fifth inning before settling for a five-inning 14-0 Class L first round no-hitter over an overmatched Timberlane squad.

“It would have been my first perfect game, but that’s all right,” said Galvin, who had 12 strikeouts of the 15 Timberlane outs. “I was upset I walked someone. I don’t like walking people anyway.”

Chelsea Mattinson led off the fifth with a walk to end the perfect-game bid. Meg Short then reached on an error, but a pinch-runner was thrown out stealing and Galvin struck out the final two batters to complete the no-hitter.

With Galvin pitching, Salem (18-2) got more than enough of a cushion by scoring seven runs in the first inning.
Sophomore Sarah Frahm (2 for 2, 2 runs scored, 4 RBIs) led off with a walk and classmates Stephanie Long, Nicole Gubellini and Amanda Baron followed with a double and two singles respectively to get things rolling.

Three more walks, an infield hit and an error allowed things to get out of control.

A five-run second-inning was highlighted by a Julia Gray triple and a Jade Morrison home run that was facilitated when the Timberlane left fielder slipped.

In what was undoubtedly Timberlane coach Jim Clavette’s worst fear, Owls’ pitching walked nine batters and hit a batter.

Although some coaches might have preferred a more competitive tourney opener, Salem coach Harold Sachs had no complaints with the Blue Devils’ opener.

“Absolutely, this is going to help us,” said Sachs. “You never know how kids are going to react in a tournament game, but I liked the way we took advantage of the walks and we were really hitting the ball in that first inning.”

Salem will host Dover Saturday at 4 p.m. in the quarterfinals. Dover defeated Manchester Central 7-4 yesterday.
