Mattison leads Andover to second at MVCs

Andover may have been hit by injuries this season, but the Golden Warriors still led the way at the Merrimack Valley Conference championship last night.

Led by a stellar performances by Rachel Mattison and Jenny Coneeny in the all-around, the Golden Warriors placed second overall with a 139.45, trailing just Chelmsford (143.7). Methuen finished a close third (138.5).

"We had a great day today," said Andover assistant coach Tracy Vadala. "Second is an excellent finish. Rachel has been tremendous all season, and Jenny has stepped up when we needed her most."

Returning All-Scholastic Mattison, a junior who missed time this season with a severe concussion, won the all-around with a 36.55, placing second in the bars and third in the vault and floor. She tited for first at the meet a season ago.   

Coneeny, a sophomore, wasn't far behind, placing second in the all-around with a 36.4. She also won the beam and was fourth in the bar. 

"Jenny didn't even compete in the all-around early in the season," said Vadala. "But when (returning All-Scholastic) Jenn Quirnbach was injured, Jenny stepped in. She is such a hard worker and is just a sophomore."

Methuen's Katie Oskar placed third in the all-around (36.3) and was third on the bars. Central Catholic's Shilanna Gallo chipped in with a victory in the vault (9.35) and tied for sixth in the all-around with Courtney Bradley of Methuen (35.8).
