Hamilton-Wenham | 1 | 0 | 1 |
When his team started the season a less than impressive 1-2-1, Hamilton-Wenham boys soccer coach Matt Gauron didn't panic. His patience paid off, as the Generals went on to win 10 of their next 12 including their sixth straight, 1-0, over Ipswich yesterday.
The reward for the remarkable turnaround was even sweeter | the Cape Ann League Small championship, H-W's first since 1986.
"The kids are ecstatic; they couldn't be happier," said Gauron. "This has been a great string of wins. Our defense has been shutting teams down with shutouts in three of our last four games."
Trey Denton put home the only goal the Generals (11-4-1) needs on a nifty feed from Devon Pierro. Staunch defenders Pat Forde, Ian McCracken and Chris Hinchley kept the Tigers (1-14-1) from notching the game-tying goal to preserve the championship clinching win.
