Gloucester dominates Hingham, 41-0 to capture Division 2A Super Bowl

Foxboro | Gloucester made history in several ways on Saturday afternoon at Gillette Stadium. With a 41-0 pasting of Hingham (11-2) in the Division 2A Super Bowl, the Fishermen (13-0) became just the third team in Eastern Mass. playoff history (Ipswich in 2006 and Marian in 2001) to allow no points in the playoffs. After a 39-0 win over Masconomet last Tuesday in the Division 2A semifinals, Gloucester once again stepped up in its biggest game of the year and finished the impressive 2007 campaign undefeated.

"After we did so well vs. Masco, I really wasn't nervous coming into this game," said Gloucester head coach Paul Ingram. "Our kids wanted this and you could tell they were dead serious about getting it (the title)."

Gloucester senior running backs Anthony Enderle (6 carries, 128 yards, 2 TD's, 2 two-point conversions) and Andrew Fulford (10 carries, 105 yards, 2 TD's) led the way in their final game for the Fishermen. After a Harbormen three-and-out on its first possession, the lethal duo teamed up on the first touchdown as Fulford ran for 34 yards on the first Gloucester play, followed by Enderle rumbling 33 yards for the touchdown.

Gloucester senior defensive end Cam Marston ended the next Hingham drive with a 5-yard sack. Next, the Fishermen marched 41 yards in seven plays that culminated in a 10-yard Fulford run. Enderle added the two-point conversion run to put Gloucester up 14-0 in the first quarter.

Fulford ended Hingham's first drive of the second quarter as he intercepted Hingham senior quarterback Pat McAuley.

The second quarter was when Gloucester effectively put the game out of reach. The Fishermen showed they have weapons on offense outside of Fulford and Enderle as junior running back Taylor Burbine went in from 54 yards out. Enderle punched in another two-point conversion to make it 22-0.

The proverbial final nail in the coffin happened on the next Hingham kick return as a Harbormen returner fumbled and Gloucester junior Dylan Maki recovered the ball at the Hingham 21-yard line. Fulford took the handoff and went untouched to the end zone on the next play.

Gloucester junior Ross Carlson had the defensive play of the game on the next Hingham drive as he blocked the Harbormen punt and then returned it himself 14 yards for a score with less than a minute remaining in the half.

Hingham senior running back Chris Constantine, the focal point of his team's offense could never get untracked as he gained just eight yards on eight carries plus one catch for eight yards. The Harbormen were held to 50 total yards in the first half and only 78 yards in the entire game. Gloucester piled up 311 total yards, 217 in the first half alone.

Initially, halftime did not seem to slow down the Fishermen as Enderle took the first play of the third quarter 73 yards to give Gloucester an unbelievable 41-0 lead after senior kicker John Celata added the PAT.

Burbine finished the day with 67 yards on six carries while senior Brian Harnish had 21 yards on seven carries.

"I think being physical was really the key," Ingram added. "We set the tone right from the beginning and no matter what everyone says, this is a physical sport. It's about blocking and tackling and we block and tackle."

2000 was the last time the Fishermen won the Super Bowl and 2001 marked the last season they were in the playoffs. Any way you cut it, 2007 was a season for the ages in Gloucester with the perfect final chapter written on Saturday.
