BYFIELD | The Triton football team drew first blood against Hamilton-Wenham last night, but it would all be down hill from there.

The Vikings fell to 1-7 with a 17-7 loss to the Generals at Triton High.

Triton opened the scoring with a 17-yard screen pass from senior captain Matt Emerzian to tight end Derek Clark that went for a touchdown. But Generals (4-3) quarterback Andrew Duval would hit junior wideout Derek Keith for a 45-yard completion, setting up a Jake Cotter 1-yard touchdown run on a drive that looked effortless.

The momentum would not swing back Triton's way. After both teams exchanged three-and-outs, the Generals closed the first half with a 34-yard Nate Masterson kick, putting the game at 10-7, Hamilton-Wenham.

Each defense forced the opposition to punt to start the second half, but the Hamilton-Wenham offense refused to remain dormant. Andrew Duval marched his Generals down to the field to the tune of another touchdown drive, connecting on two pass attempts for 21 yards, hitting Masterson for a 10-yard pass in the end zone.

The fourth quarter looked much like the first quarter, starting off with a Triton punt. Hamilton-Wenham would look to put the nail in the coffin late in the final quarter, but on 4th-and-short their drive was halted by a Duval sack. Triton coach Shawn McElligott then turned to junior quarterback Sam Ferrara for perhaps a spark into an offense that needed it, but on just his second pass of the day, Ferrara was intercepted and the drive was cut immediately short.

Hamilton-Wenham, not looking to make any mistakes and blow a late lead, took a conservative approach in their final drive of the game, running the ball three times and punting to give the Vikings one last shot at a comeback.

Ferrara would connect on three straight passes for 27 yards, but followed it with three straight incompletions, handing the ball back over to Generals quarterback Andrew Duval, who would kneel to run the clock out with less than a minute left.
