Haverhill was elated and Whitter was fuming and in disbelief after the Hillies won 6-5 in nine innings.

Whittier scored the go-ahead run in the top of frame on four straight singles, the last by Steve Surette. With the bases loaded and one out, it seemed like the Cats easily would add another run on a sacrifice fly. But Haverhill appealed that the runner left early so that run and two more runs that scored on an overthrow were negated.

Haverhill (3-0) took advantage as Ronnie Rosario singled in Brendon Bretton, who had singled and stolen second. Rosario scored the game-winner on a Zach Cox single.

"It got heated,'' admitted Hillie coach Chip Dunn. "There was real controversy at the end."

Haverhill tied it in the bottom of the seventh when Josh Chasse tripled and scored on a wild pitch. The Hillies had the bases loaded in the eighth but Dillon Ryan fanned the next batter and got the next batter to line to shortstop Bill Lafferty, who doubled a runner off.
