EVERETT - There were no words as the final pass of Friday night's Division 1 North semifinal game hit the turf incomplete.

On one sideline, it was pure, speechless shock. On the other, pandemonium.

When that pass fell incomplete, Central Catholic had just done the unthinkable.

Top-seeded Everett needs no introduction. The Crimson Tide are two-time defending state champs. They were winners of 27 straight. They are the monster that has dominated Massachusetts football since the start of the millennium.

But when that pass fell incomplete, clinching No. 4 Central's shocking 23-20 victory Friday night, none of that mattered. The Raiders swarmed the field in joy, screaming inaudibly while hugging every white uniform within reach. Some even had tears streaming down their face.

There were just no words.

So it was fitting that one of the heroes of the game, Nick Mazzie, whose father, Steven, is the Everett Police Chief, summed up the night perfectly with just one line.

"They're going to remember this one for a long time," said the sophomore Mazzie, whose 33-yard field goal with 57 seconds left put Central ahead for good. "This is going to go down in history."

Mazzie was true with his foot and true with his words.

This win will be one they'll remember at Central for years, heck, decades to come.

"This means a lot not just to us, but to people who have come to Central in the past and the people that will come to Central in the future," said senior Mike LeFebre, who set up the game-winning drive with an interception.

Everyone stepped up for Central (7-2) Friday night. The defense, led by linebackers Cameron Boes and Lewy Baez-Tronocoso, held Everett (8-1) to just 55 rushing yards. The offense, led by junior quarterback Jared Silverio, made every big play it needed to.

But Mazzie may have showed the most poise of all.

After trailing 20-7 at one point, the Raiders came back to tie the game at 20-20 with 2:34 left after Silverio hit AJ Caggianelli on a 13-yard touchdown. Mazzie came out for the extra point, thinking he was going to put his team ahead for good, but the kick was blocked.

When LeFebre and the offense gave him another chance, Mazzie wasn't going to let it slip.

"I don't even know, man, it's so surreal," said Mazzie. "I was just thinking about this moment and it happened, and I'm just so happy right now."

The Raiders were tough. And perhaps no one displayed as much grit as Silverio.

After taking a big hit in the midsection early in the second half, the junior QB was struggling to keep his lunch down the rest of the game. But that wasn't a problem.

He finished his day with 194 all-purpose yards, and accounted for all three of Central's touchdowns.

"It was great," said Silverio. "This is the best feeling ever. This means so much. Everett, they were ranked higher than us, they were undefeated. We knew they had some big boys with Division 1 offers, so it was great."

For Central, especially for the seniors, this win was years in the making. Everett had knocked the Raiders out of the tournament the past two years, and nobody in Lawrence had forgotten that.

"It's huge," said co-captain Joe Howshan. "The past couple years we were trying to get past Everett and we couldn't do it. Finally this year we're going back to the finals and it couldn't be a better feeling."

The Raiders will face another familiar foe in No. 2 St. John's Prep in the Division 1 North Finals next week. As of Friday night, a start time had not been announced.

But Central probably won't worry about that for another day or so.
