HAVERHILL - You'd be right to forgive Haverhill's Sam Prescott if he was a little off during Saturday's game.

After all, the senior took his SATs in the morning, and then suited up to take on rival Lawrence just a couple of hours later.

But there was no sign of a mental drain.

In fact, Prescott showed some heightened concentration when he caught a ridiculous 38-yard, over-the-shoulder pass while being held, and when he came away with two interceptions to help the Hillies smother Lawrence 30-8 Saturday evening at Trinity Stadium.

"The (interception) before the half I knew the kid was going deep," said the 6-foot Prescott. "So I held my form over the top and got the pick. On the other one, we do this thing where you sit on a curl (route), so I sat under it and the ball came right into my chest."

The win was an important one for the Hillies (3-2) after an emotional and thrilling loss to Methuen last week.

"It feels great honestly," said Prescott. "I love it."

Prescott led a defense that held Lawrence (0-4) to just 151 total yards of offense. The only Lancer score came on a Manuel Lara 90-yard kickoff return late in the second quarter that made it a 17-8 game.

"We just played tough up front and held them back when they tried to toss the rock," said Prescott.

In what was a 17-8 game at the half, Prescott's second pick was crucial. It came on the opening drive of the third quarter, and set up a Dante Cadeus 6-yard TD pass from quarterback Brady Skafas six plays later that made it 24-8.

"Sam showed great leadership today," said Haverhill coach Tim O'Connor. "Especially seeing as he took the SATs this morning. I'm proud of him. ... The kids really bounced back after a toss loss last week and they took coaching this week. I'm proud of them."

Offensively, Haverhill was paced yet again by back David Carreiro. The senior rushed for 149 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns. His 66-yard TD in the fourth quarter punctuated the win for Haverhill.

"David stepped up," said O'Connor. "David keeps getting better every week, he keeps getting stronger. He was hurt the first couple weeks of the season, but he's getting healthier and helping us on offense and defense."

For Lawrence, it was another outstanding day for linebacker Brandon Santell. The 6-1, 238-pound senior was in on 11 tackles, and when he hits, it's always hard.

"You can quote me on this. He. Is. A. Dude," said O'Connor.

Lawrence will try to get its first win on Friday when it hosts Lowell at 7 p.m.

Haverhill hosts Andover on Friday at 7 p.m. as well.

"Today gets the train back on track for us," said O'Connor. "Every game matters. We have Andover coming in here Friday night, we know they're explosive and we need to be ready."
