WESTON — There’s ending the season on a high note, and then there’s what Brooks did to Rivers last night.
Brooks, which lost their first three games of the season and finally beat Governor’s Academy to snap a 16-game losing streak, toppled Rivers 42-7 to conclude the season at 3-5. The Green and White lost to Rivers 40-22 last year.
“It was a terrific way to end the season for two reasons: first, for the seniors who’ve worked so hard, it’s nice for them to go out with a win, the way they’ve helped turn the program around. Second, it’s also a nice way to catapult us into next season. It’s excellent to go out on a positive note,” said first-year coach Alex Konovalchik.
Jordan Johnson was superb in the season’s final game, rushing for 127 yards on eight carries (15.9 yard per carry average) and recording 60 yards through the air on 4-of-7 passing. Johnson had touchdown runs of 27 and 41 yards, and also chipped in a 95-yard kick return in the third quarter.
“Jordan was absolutely dominant, but it was a team effort, as well,” Konovalchik said.
Not to be outdone, Jason Buco returned a fumble 99 yards for a score in the fourth quarter, his third-straight game with a defensive touchdown. The Green and White really seem to have turned the corner after suffering through a winless season last year.
