NORTH ANDOVER — Methuen’s Jason Buco and his Brooks teammates were itching for a win. Unfortunately, it didn’t come yesterday.

The Green and White fought the good fight, but ended up falling 16-13 to St. George’s. The fact that the score was close made it even tougher to take.

“It’s very difficult because we didn’t win a ballgame last year,” first-year head coach Alex Konovalchik said.
Brooks, which went 0-8 in 2007, drops to 0-3. It hasn’t won a game since Oct. 7, 2006, when it beat St. George’s 35-24.

Yesterday’s loss made it 16 in a row. Last season, the Dragons beat Brooks 15-12.

“Last year it was a similar result,” said Buco, a junior defensive back and receiver who had one catch for 10 yards. “They’re a rival team almost.”

Brooks looked sharp early. Steven Domoracki capped a 13-play drive with a 5-yard touchdown run at 9:06 in the second quarter to open the scoring.

St. George’s caught a break a few minutes later. After Charlie Fleming’s 1-yard score, the Dragons lined up for a two-point conversion. Fleming appeared to be sacked, but was able to flip the ball to Sam Kinney, who rumbled into the end zone to give his team an 8-7 lead.

Brooks defensive back/quarterback Jordan Johnson showed flashes of exceptional athleticism, intercepting Fleming’s pass to kill a potential St. George’s scoring drive in the closing minutes of the first half. He also gave the Green and White a 13-8 lead with a 3-yard touchdown scamper at 3:23 in the third quarter.

The Dragons, however, took the lead early in the fourth. Penalties killed off two Brooks drives later in the quarter, stalling a comeback.

“We made too many mistakes on offense,” Konovalchik said.
