Word about the demise of St. John's Prep seems to have been greatly exaggerated. The Eagles looked like they were in trouble after losing five out of six at the end of April, and at 7-6 a state tournament berth was anything but guaranteed.

How quickly things change. The Prep sent ripples throughout the state with Monday's 16-0 pounding of Malden Catholic | thought by many to be the best team in Eastern Mass.

"I'd have to say it was a good win," said Prep coach Pat Yanchus. "We scored nine runs after two outs in the second. That got us going."

The momentum might've started, however, days earlier when the Prep got the better of Keith Landers of St. Peter's Marian, one of Western Mass.' top hurlers. Peter Neal stole home in the last inning to top the Louisville-bound lefty, and the Prep has been riding high since.

Needing only one more win to secure their 13th straight postseason berth and with their confidence as high as it has been all season, the Eagles are looking dangerous in Division 1.
