PLAISTOW — Highly-regarded Newtown had more standouts Saturday at the Timberlane Invitational, but the host Owls boasted more depth.

As a result, Timberlane won its own invitational with 241 points with Newtown — despite crowning five champions — a distant second with 173. Timberlane had four champs but, more important, placed 13 wrestlers in the top four, seven more than Newtown.

Londonderry placed third in the 18-team field with 133 points.

"We needed a total team effort to top Newtown," said Timberlane coach Barry Chooljian. "They certainly had lots of champs and wrestled well, but we pushed 14 in the semis in the morning then put eight in the finals capturing four titles."

Highlighting the four titles for the Owls was sophomore 138-pounder Justin Berube, who got a late takedown for a 4-2 decision over Victoor Plante in the finals.

Winning as expected for Timberlane was 120-pounder McGonagle, who had three pins on the day, and 160-pounder Cam Altobelli, who recorded four falls.

Also taking first was 106-pounder Barret Kappler, who edged teammated Taylor Donovan, 7-6, in the finals.

Joining Donovan with runner-up medals were Robbie Pinault (113), Jacob Post (182), Ryan Cole (220) and Noah Beaulieu (285).

For Londonderry, Ryan Cabezas and Tyler Byrd both won close decisions in the finals to bring home gold. Cabezas took a 6-5 decision at 126 and Byrd prevailed in a wild 10-8 duel at 132. Mahdi Achab took a second for the Lancers at 170.
