Any coach loves to have an impact freshman on his team. The freshman making the biggest impact so far is Peabody High's MaryKate Helas.
Helas, who is the designated player for the Tanners, had her second straight big game yesterday, finishing 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs as Peabody defeated Beverly, 6-3. Last week Helas went 4-for-5 with a grand slam homer against Everett, so she is 7-for-9 for the season.
"She definitely looks like a special player," said Peabody (2-0) coach Butch Melanaphy. "She kind of reminds me of Mandy Correale when she played here. MaryKate really stings the ball. I can't see her going into a slump. She really knows the strike zone."
Sophomore Nicole Wilson went the route for the win.
Freshman third baseman Monica Cassola went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Beverly. Beth Cullen had two hits and two RBIs and Elise Perron had a hit and drove in a run. Beverly had a 3-1 lead but a couple of miscues in the field enabled Peabody to take the lead in the fourth. Kristen Lojko took the loss on the mound.
