Odds and ends: There are 10 juniors on the team, but no seniors. ...  The top returning hitters, Shannon Doherty and Brittany Gentile, are both sophomores. Doherty is the first sophomore captain coach Terry Bailey has had. ... Second baseman Aimee Walters has looked impressive at the plate in the preseason as has letterman Meagan Farris. ... Sophomore newcomer Yvonne Cordeau has sparkled at the plate as well. ... Cara Chooljian should get the bulk of the work on the mound after winning five of the Astros' eight games last year.

Coach Terry Bailey (10th year, 120-64): "We're absolutely going to be stronger than last year. My goal is to break the top eight and we have the talent for that. We have more experience and we have a lot more flexibility. We also have a lot more depth, with competition at a lot of positions, which is good. A lot of positions will be determined by Katie Miller, whether she catches or plays shortstop."
