GROTON — After a rocky first half saw his squad trailing by a touchdown, Brooks coach Pat Foley decided to make the plan very simple.
"We just decided, keep handing it to Chris (Cervizzi) and everything would be OK," the coach said with a laugh. "And it was."
Cervizzi, the 5-foot-6 bull of a halfback form North Reading, was a perfect fit for the sloppy conditions, carrying the ball a whopping 39 times for 237 yards and two touchdowns as Brooks rallied back to defeat Groton 24-12.
The returning Eagle-Tribune All-Star gave the Green and White the lead in the first on a three-yard run, but Groton bounced back with two scores to lead at the half.
"We really didn't play a great first half," said Foley. "But we came out in the second half, the running game finally got going and defensively we really started to figure things out."
Brooks scored one turnover as Haverhill's Coy Candelario intercepted a pass, then recovered a fumble.
QB K.J. Moore gave Brooks the lead back with an 11-yard run for a score, and Cervizzi added to the advantage with a 4-yard TD.
"The offensive line really picked it up and Chris was Chris again," said Foley.
