LOWELL — Free-swinging and loose, Andover was ready to rip through another postseason foe. John Galvin would have none of it.

Galvin, the ace of the Norwood High staff which allowed just four runs in a four-game run to the South sectional title, shackled the North champ Golden Warriors on three hits to claim a 2-1 decision here in the Division 1 Eastern Mass. championship at LeLacheur Park.

“We knew they had a lot of fastball hitters,” said Norwood coach Kevin Igoe. “Galvin kept them off balance all night with his changeup and curve, especially the change. He’s topping out (with his fastball) right now at about 75, because he’s probably thrown 85 innings this spring. But he just did such a good job with the change and the curve.”

An Andover lineup that put up six runs a game in the North sectional run, managed only three hits off the nifty righty Galvin. And none of those came after the second inning as Galvin sat down the last 17 hitters he faced.

“He was tough, but I thought the play their center fielder made on Frank Potts in the first inning was the big play,” said Warrior coach Dan Grams. “(With a runner on second) Frank hits the ball up the gap, and their guy goes and makes a diving catch. It really took the wind out of our sails.”

The loss spoiled a world-class relief effort from lefty Sam Bennett, who entered the first inning with the bases-loaded, one out, one run in and a 2-0 count on Norwood’s Paul Galvin.

A winner out of the pen both Wednesday and Saturday, Bennett induced an inning-ending double play ball and was nearly unhittable the rest of the night, going 6.2 innings and allowing only five hits without a walk while striking out four.

“I’ve had him four years now, he competes and he just understands the game,” said Grams, whose club finished 16-9.

Down 1-0, the Warriors got a little creative in tying things up.

E.J. Perry IV singled and moved to third on a perfectly executed hit-and-run single from Jack Cox. The pair then worked the double steal, with Perry outracing a return throw from short to knot it at 1-1.

Norwood scratched the game-winner in the third when Jack Sheehan reached on an error, stole second and scored on a wild pitch.

From there, it was a two-team show of pitching and defense.

When Bennett made a minor mistake, his defense had his back, like the freshman Perry gunning down two other would-be base stealers.
