A long weekend up North was just the thing the St. John's Prep hockey team needed.
The Eagles captured the 16th annual Doc Tulip Tournament in Vermont after knocking off Essex Junction, 5-0, Saturday afternoon. The victory, coupled with the Prep's 2-2 tie with Bellows Free Academy on Friday night, gave them the tournament title.
The newly formed first line of right wing Colin Prior (2 goals), center Danny Haugh (1 goal, 2 assists) and left wing Christian Cowles (2 assists) had a big game as the Eagles won for the first time this season.
"This was a really good weekend for us," said Prep head coach Kristian Hanson. "Before (Saturday's) game, we talked as a team in a conference room of the hotel we were staying in, going over team goals and systems and taking questions. It was very positive, very productive, and they translated onto the ice."
Justin DiRienzo and defenseman Ed Estey also scored for the Eagles (1-1-1) while junior third line center Derek Dubois earned his first varsity point by assisting on Estey's goal. Senior Kyle Pettoruto stopped 24 shots for the shutout in net, while Dan Lawton showed good energy on the third line.
