Salem's Stan Goodwin hasn't seen much time between the pipes throughout his hockey career. In fact, the sophomore just moved to the position fulltime at the start of this season. That didn't stop him from taking control last night at Rockett Arena, as he stopped 10 shots in relief of Cody Grondin to lead the Witches over Lynn, 2-1, and earn his first varsity win.
"I told Stan (before the game) that he would play against Lynn," said Salem coach Brian Addessa. "He's a hard worker, takes shots every day in practice and I wanted to reward him. I never like pulling a goalie but I felt like this was a good chance to get Stan some work and Cody understood that."
Mike Day scored on the power play with four minutes left in the game to put the Witches (3-11-0) ahead, and tremendous defense made the tally stand up. Addessa cited a blocked shot by Kyle Silva in the final minutes as one of many tenacious plays that sparked the victory.
"It was the best total performance that we've put together," the first-year coach said. "I told our defensive corps that this was one of the best performances the six of them have put together."
Nate Daniels put Salem on top in the first period, but Lynn answered in the second to send the teams to the final frame deadlocked 1-1. Grondin stopped 12 shots before conceeding the tying goal at 10:43 of the middle period.
