One challenge down, one more to go.
With a depth-driven 45-41 victory over previously unbeaten Newburyport, North Andover locked up at least a share of the Cape Ann League boys track title. The Knights can win it outright if they beat a one-loss Masconomet squad in their last league meet Saturday.
"Everybody only did one event," said head coach Josh Herzog. "The key to our victory was our depth and the guys who picked up second and third places."
This was highlighted in back-to-back races where the Knights claimed five of six places and locked up the victory with two events to spare.
Led by Brendan Varney's 1:22.2, North Andover swept the 600 with David Rose (1:22.9) taking the runner-up spot and Kyle Quinn (1:23.9) placing third. In the 1,000, seniors Greg MacArthur (2:43.9) and Max Almono (2:44.1) fended off a strong Clipper runner on the last lap to finish 1-2.
"Newburyport had one of their veteran runners that could potentially split Greg and Max up and those two wouldn't have it," said Herzog.
Other highlights came from freshman Zach Frahlich (third in the mile in 4:57.2) and Pat Irwin (second in the high jump at 5-10), posting point-scoring personal bests in the process.
