HAVERHILL — Not one player but the entire Haverhill team was presented with the game ball by the coaching staff after the Hillies finally broke their 32-game winless streak with a 39-12 victory over Malden last night.

"These kids have put their heart and soul into this since last year," second-year coach Tim O'Connor said. "Most importantly, this victory goes out to last year's seniors. The Malcolm Novellos, the Mac Milewskis who took it on the chin last year. And they bought into my system and they knew it was a teaching year and that they were setting the foundation for the future. And this win is dedicated to them because without them, this never happens."

Chance Brady had a terrific game, rushing 31 times for 199 yards and three touchdowns.

He bounced back after fumbling the opening handoff in the first quarter.

"I'm not going to lie, I beat myself up a little bit (after the fumble), but my team told me it's a long game and a long game it is," Brady said. "I just ran like I knew I could. I had (quarterback) Tommy (Morgan) with me. And it was a good game."

Brady and his teammates all plan to initial the game ball.

"I can't tell you in words what it means to this team to win this game," Brady said. "It's been coming and we needed this. And our city needed this. Now we want it all. This team is for real. We have serious competition (coming up). But I honestly believe this team can take it far. Everyone puts in too much effort to not win more."

Morgan completed 8 of 14 passes for 200 yards.

"I love Chance," Morgan said. "I always tell him that he's the best running back in the MVC. Without him, I wouldn't be able to do what I do."

Blaine Joia got the Haverhill offense jumpstarted in the first quarter by hauling in a 86-yard touchdown pass to make it 6-6. Joia caught a pass from Morgan in the flat and ran a good length of the field into the end zone.

"We were actually doing a run play at the time and my coach called a (quick pass instead) because the safety was playing off a bit and he thought I could make something happen," Joia said. "He told me that just as long as I cut outside, I'll be free. And that's what I did. And what do you know? I was in the end zone."

Joia, a senior, returned to Hillies program after not playing his junior year.

"This is big," he said. "This is big for the city and the school. We tried our hardest all summer."

Morgan added: "It's been a long time since we won a game and it's surreal right now. I can't even put it into words. Now, we can put this aside and go play football like we're suppose to."
