Salem, the defending Class L softball champions, lost its first game of the season 1-0 to Manchester Central, snapping a 23-game winning streak dating back to last year. Central scored in the bottom of the seventh to spoil a fine pitching performance by Nicole Gubellini.
"They're a good team and it's hard to keep winning when the competition has gotten so intense," said coach Harold Sachs, whose team is now 10-1. "We're not down about it at all. We had our chances."
