Champs of Haverhill

 

After defeating Haverhill High earlier in the season, the Pentucket boys basketball team whipped Whittier 63-52 thanks to an overwhelming third period sparked by Corey McNamara. Trailing 22-20 at halftime, the Sachems (7-4) outscored Whittier 23-5 as McNamara sank four 3-pointers and had 14 points in the frame. Ryan Grant had 30 points for Whittier, 17 coming in the fourth quarter.

Sachems can't snag upset

Pentucket Regional came as close to a giant upset as you can get, falling in overtime to Wilmington, 72-65. "We missed a layup with one second left in regulation," said Sachem coach Leo Parent. "We had about as good a look as you can get with one second and it just didn't roll in. Then we just ran out of gas in overtime." Corey McNamara paced the Sachems with 23 points, canning six three-pointers.

Mike Doud was named the tournament MVP and he added a team high 20 points and four 3-pointers as Pentucket beat Georgetown 54-44. Pentucket's Corey McNamara and Georgetown's Johnny Spears and Tyler Wade all made the all-tournament team.

Flipping the script

Pentucket's man-to-man defense took Newburyport out of its offense in the second half, allowing the Sachems to charge back from a 12-point defense to win by a dozen, 54-42, to open River Rival Tourney play. Tim Freiermuth excelled at the defensive end and drained three 3-pointers in a clutch third-quarter effort. Will Angelini (12 points) added eight third-quarter points and joined John Modlish for a strong effort on the boards.
