Pinkerton's Cara Copeland and Nadia Sheen couldn't have picked a better way to kick off the season.

With the meet tied going into the final match, Copeland and Sheen teamed to take No. 3 doubles 8-3 and clinch the Astros' season-opening 5-4 win over Alvirne.

Central Catholic girls tennis edged Billerica 3-2. Maggie Hillman's victory at second singles was the deciding match. She prevailed 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 to help the Raiders pull out a win.

The Sachems (0-3) were unable to overcome the Masconomet Chieftains in their first league match, losing 4-1. Second singles player, freshman Rachel Downey, won her match 6-4, 6-4.

"Everyone is improving every week," said Clipper coach Alyson Lindquist. "We just happen to be playing some very talented competition that feature players who have many years of competition. Our girls are still learning, but they are getting better with each match."

Triton's third singles player, junior Allie Murray, scored the only Viking points on the day, winning her match 7-5, 6-2.

"Lynnfield is just a tough squad. They always are," said Triton coach Martha Murray. "They have a lot of depth and some really good club players."

Both Central Catholic and Haverhill girls tennis registered 5-0 victories over Lowell and Amesbury respectively. In first singles, Central's Jackie Carroll won 6-2, 6-2, and Haverhill's Meghan Cokely won 6-1, 6-0.

New Central Catholic tennis coach Jodi Michaud won her debut, a 4-1 victory over Methuen. Making it more special is Michaud was an Eagle-Tribune All-Star at Methuen. Jackie Carroll and Jana Winfield won at singles for the Raiders. 

North Andover's top doubles team of Alex Specht and Frannie McFall needed a little extra Gatorade but pulled out a 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 win to help the unbeaten Knights trip Ipswich.

Triton's singles proved the difference against Pentucket yesterday, as Lauren Mihalchik defeated Karena Webber (6-3, 6-2), Molly Fargeorge defeated Rachael Downey (6-4, 7-6), and Allie Murray defeated Sarah Dillon (6-1, 6-1). The Sachem doubles sealed the last two wins, as Amy Dickinson and Erica-Jenee McKee defeated Teresa and Emily Kaminski (6-4, 3-6, 6-1), and Katharine Torrisi and Amy Babeu defeated Julia Ackerly and Sydney White (7-5, 6-3).
