It wasn't a banner day for the shorthanded Haverhill girls cross country team, what with two of its top three runners taking a wrong turn, as it fell to both Andover and Central Catholic, but it was a good day for Hillie senior Julie Solimine. She pulled away in the last half mile to outduel Andover junior Maggie Mullins and take first in 19:18 over Central's hilly 3.05-mile course.

Salem's girls cross country team captured the Battle of the Border meet at Alvirne for the first time, putting four runners in the top eight and scoring 35 points to easily beat the runner-up host team. Junior Alyssa Lambert finished second in 20:52 on the 5K course and Samantha Hutchins, Amanda Buck and Ailish Barry finished 6-7-8.

Andover junior Maggie Mullins had a spectacular debut in her first cross country dual meet, smashing the Andover course record by 22 seconds. In a 28-29 loss to Lowell, the standout miler ran a 19:34 on the rugged 5K course to break the record set by Haverhill's Colleen McNaughton in 2005.
