In an intense matchup between two bitter River Rivals, Pentucket prevailed over Newburyport, 17-13.

For Pentucket Zoe McKenzie had two goals and one assist, K.C. Jones had two goals and four assists, Sarah Evers had one goal and four assists, Brianna Yocum had three goals and one assist, Sarah Galligan had four goals and four assists, Kayla Jewett had three goals and one assist, Autumn Gadd had a goal, Vanessa Cahill had a goal and an assist, and Calley Jocum had an assist.

The Gloucester girls lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season in the most dramatic fashion possible: Six minutes into overtime, junior center midfielder Jennavie Orrell scored her seventh goal of the game to clinch an 18-17 win over Danvers and send her teammates into delirium.

Number 14 wasn't suited up and on the field yesterday in the Masconomet Chieftains girls lacrosse game against Ipswich.

But Kate Evans' presence, as well as her uniform number, were everywhere -- both on the field and on the sidelines.

More than once this season, you probably had to rub your eyes and look twice at the scores for the Masconomet girls team's results. If it seems like the Chieftains are putting up big numbers, it's because they are.

Julia Croyle has hardly had any time to mourn the end of her high school softball career.

Then again, you really can't afford to look back when hard rubber balls are being fired in your direction at frightening rates of speed.

Seventeen saves from Stephanie Taylor and a ton of defense earned North Andover an 11-7 win over Pentucket. Nicole Zahoruiko, Kelly O'Connor, Katie Boringa and Amanda Wescott were virtually impenetrable in front of Taylor to keep the Scarlet Knights unbeaten in Cape Ann League play (9-0, 12-1-1 overall).

Even without being at the game, Andover girls lacrosse coach John McVeigh made his presence felt yesterday afternoon against archrival North Andover.

"He was texting us on the way to the game, telling us what to look for, how he wanted us to play," said Andover tri-captain Kelly Driscoll. "He had us ready."

The second-year Bishop Fenwick girls lacrosse team has proven it can win games. Yesterday, the Crusaders showed they are capable of erasing deficits on the way to victory.

Senior captain Casey Otovic rolled around the cage after a restart and scored the game-winner | her only tally of the afternoon | with 25 seconds left as Fenwick improved to 10-0 with 10-9 win over Austin Prep.
