Whittier baseball wins 16-inning thriller

With runners at first and second in the top of the 16th inning, Scott Neenan singled to give Whittier the lead. Then with a runner at third in the bottom of the inning, catcher John Moody fired a throw to Cam Camasso for a pick-off that ended a 5-4 Wildcats victory over St. Mary's.

Sudden death hits HPNA

HAVERHILL — As remarkable as her career has been, it's almost a tragedy the last shot Michaela Kane faced slipped past the Hillie goalie for a sudden-death game winner.

Looking for the third-year program's first postseason victory, sixth-seeded Haverhill-Pentucket-North Andover took 22nd-seed St. Mary's into overtime, but the Spartans took advantage of a rebound that was slammed home for a 1-0 victory in the first round of the Mass. Division 1 tourney.

Michaela Kane made 27 saves but Haverhill-North Andover-Pentucket couldn't generate enough offense and dropped a 1-0 decision to St. Mary's of Lynn. Georgetown's Katie Terban had an assist for St. Mary's which scored its lone goal in the third period.

Julio Vicente's halfcourt bomb that the buzzer forced overtime, and Lawrence High made good in the extra session, dumping St. Mary's of Lynn, 62-60.
Vicente led suddenly-surging Lawrence with 20 points on the night, and Chen Chen chipped in 16.

St. Mary has Cats number

Whittier Tech has seen plenty of the St. Mary's of Lynn softball team ... Probably too much.
After falling to the Spartans in the North finals a year ago, the Wildcats were beaten, 6-2, by St. Mary's in yesterday's Division 3 North semis.
The Cats scored first, plating a pair on Ashley Wilson's first-inning base hit, but that was all Whittier could manage offensively.

Hornets in semis

 

North Reading's boys tennis team advanced to the Division 3 North semifinals for the first time in program history with a 5-0 shutout of St. Mary's. Kyle Harris remained unbeaten at third singles (11-0) andthe first doubles team of Justin Zhang and Chris Leighton won in three sets. The Hornets were last in the North semis in 1996, when they were Division 2.
