With runners at first and second in the top of the 16th inning, Scott Neenan singled to give Whittier the lead. Then with a runner at third in the bottom of the inning, catcher John Moody fired a throw to Cam Camasso for a pick-off that ended a 5-4 Wildcats victory over St. Mary's.

HAVERHILL — As remarkable as her career has been, it's almost a tragedy the last shot Michaela Kane faced slipped past the Hillie goalie for a sudden-death game winner.

Looking for the third-year program's first postseason victory, sixth-seeded Haverhill-Pentucket-North Andover took 22nd-seed St. Mary's into overtime, but the Spartans took advantage of a rebound that was slammed home for a 1-0 victory in the first round of the Mass. Division 1 tourney.

Lawrence made a stop on the final possession to beat St. Mary's 58-57 in the Spartan Classic championship game. Freshmen Christopher Ruiz continued his hot-stretch, totaling 23 points with five 3-pointers. 

Michaela Kane made 27 saves but Haverhill-North Andover-Pentucket couldn't generate enough offense and dropped a 1-0 decision to St. Mary's of Lynn. Georgetown's Katie Terban had an assist for St. Mary's which scored its lone goal in the third period.

Sarah Oteri won her debut, guiding the Methuen-Tewksbury hockey team to a season-opening 2-1 win over St. Mary's. Kelly Golini scored both Red Ranger goals and Kaia Hollingsworth turned aside 35 shots.

Whittier overcame a 6-goal halftime deficit to cut the lead to just one goal. But the Wildcats fell to St. Mary's 15-14. Devin Houde led Whittier with five goals.

St. Mary's of Worcester rollled past Fellowship 58-19. Leigh-Ann Trepanier had 11 in the loss.

North Reading's boys tennis team advanced to the Division 3 North semifinals for the first time in program history with a 5-0 shutout of St. Mary's. Kyle Harris remained unbeaten at third singles (11-0) andthe first doubles team of Justin Zhang and Chris Leighton won in three sets. The Hornets were last in the North semis in 1996, when they were Division 2.
