North Andover's boys soccer scored in the first half and made the lone goal stick in a 1-0 victory over Wayland in the Division 2 North first round. Evan Boudreau scored for the Knights, who got eight saves from Mike Moroney and a fine performance from defenders Danny Connolly, Nick Kingswood, Zach Karelis and Brett Smith. The Knights will play the winner of today's Northeast-Melrose game, probably on Wednesday

North Reading falls

WAYLAND — Despite a subpar offensive effort, North Reading was positioned for an upset.

Behind some staunch defense and the inside dominance of senior center Jeff Tyner, the seventh-seeded Hornets gave No. 2 Wayland all it could handle last night before the hosts pulled themselves together and pulled away for a 62-45 Division 3 North quarterfinal victory.

Ernie Lupi's goal late in the first period drew Haverhill even and Brad McGovern's shorthanded breakaway score capped a four-goal run that earned the Hillies a 5-3 victory over Wayland. Freshman Keagan Fitzpatrick and sophomore Nate Hoar have filled some injury-induced holes on defense and played well beside regulars Ken Murray and sophomore Jack Franklin.
