Central 2nd at Waylane

 

Central Catholic scored 200 1/2 points at the Wayland Tournament, which usually would be enough to win, but MVC rival Lowell was slightly better with 203.

The Raiders did have four champions, however, as impressive freshman Joey Sanchez (106), Tom Pagliarulo (126), Brandon Desfosses (145( and Donovan Nolan (160) all took gold medals. Jack Kiely was a runner-up at 120.

Conway Scores 60th goal, ties state record

Methuen junior Amanda Conway scored five goals to hit 60 on the year, equalling the state record for most goals scored in one season (Canton's Brittany Lyons 2008). She led Tewksbury/Methuen over Wayland/Weston 7-3.

Showdown winner

 

In a battle of two of the top Division 3 wrestling teams in the state, North Reading/Lynnfield remained undefeated (22-0) by clipping Wayland (23-2), which suffered just its second loss of the season. North Reading won nearly all the close matches, none more important than Max Whyman's 5-3 decision at 120 and Tom Arseneault's clinching 4-3 win at 220.

Whittier Tech senior Austin Sciacca, who won his weight class at the Tyngsboro Tournament last week, stayed unbeaten with a first period pin at 220, but the Wildcats dropped a 42-40 thriller at Wayland.

Kayla Riley had 13 points and Samnell Vonleh pumped in 12 as Whittier downed Wayland 57-44. But the big story was the 6-4 Vonleh (13) and 6-1 Josie Sanchez (8) combined for 21 blocks.
