The Andover girls hockey team qualified for the state tournament after taking down Westford, 3-1. Goalie Lillian Jagger stopped 18 shots in the win for the Warriors (9-4-3).

Raiders near comeback falls short

Trailing Westford 4-1 early in the third, the Central Catholic boys hockey team got a goal from Robert DiBiasio early in the period, then pulled to within one  with six minutes left when Michael Dinges finished a nice feed off a 2-on-1 rush. But, Westford scored with three minutes left, then added an empty-netter to take the 6-3 win.

Pentucket exorcises demons, rallies past Westford

METHUEN — After two straight holiday disappointments at the hands of Westford Academy, Pentucket had no intention of making it three years in a row.

“We lost to them each of the last two years in the Christmas tournament, so this game was really big,” said co-captain Angelica Hurley. “We wanted this really badly. As seniors, this was our last shot at them, so it meant so much for us to get this win.”

Trailing 18-2 after the first quarter, Andover clawed back before downing Westford 52-43. Tatum Shaw scored 17 points to pace the Warriors (2-0), who outscored Westford 36-16 in the second half.

Haverhill falls short to Westford Academy

WESTFORD — Haverhill's Ayden Alverado turned in 10 tackles, but the Hillies fell to Westford Academy 39-22 on Saturday. 

Senior Hillie QB Brady Skafas threw a 13-yard touchdown to Jayden Johnson in the second and ran for a 4-yard touchdown in the fourth.

Jabari Baptise added the other Hillie score — a four-yard TD run — and rushed for a team-high 90 yards. Teyshon McGee led the Brown and Gold with 85 receiving yards.

Haverhill (0-3) next hosts unbeaten Methuen (3-0) on Saturday (3 p.m.)
