NORTH READING — Bobby Rosano loves to get the home crowdgoing wild and he did just when he made a steal off an inbound pass athalfcourt and dribbled in for an uncontested layup to put North Reading aheadnine points over Arlington Catholic with 4 minutes, 31 seconds left in the gameyesterday.

“Olay, Olay, Olay, Olay, Olay,” the energetic North Readingstudent section sang.

Meanwhile, the energetic Rosano wasn’t finished.

He made another steal about one minute later and passed offto a wide-open P.J. Dionne underneath the basket. Dionne scored to give thehome team an 11-point advantage.

“This is our house, this is our house,” The North Readingstudents chanted boisterously.

No. 7 seeded North Reading won 70-58 over No. 10 ArlingtonCatholic in Division 3 North first-round action in front of a packed gymnasium.

North Reading advanced to play No. 2-seeded Wayland onFriday at Wayland.

Rosano’s two big steals seemed to take the life out ofArlington Catholic, which was down by as many as 18 points in the second halfbut rallied to narrow its deficit to just three points with 6:41 left in thecontest.

“That’s typical Bobby,” senior Ben Makowski said. “That’swhat he does. It was just great to see him really, really step up tonight. Iremember he made that (first) steal. I was sitting back at the end of the courtand I watched him put the layup in and I just slammed the floor, looked at thecrowd and said, ‘Let’s go’ because that was the turning point. I don’t know howmuch that put us up by but that was kind of what started our run to finish offthe game. He stepped up every time we needed him to step up.”

Rosano said he basically just did a good job of reading theArlington Catholic player who inbounded the basketball.

“He just wasn’t really watching me,” Rosano said. “He wasjust watching his guys. I just kind of sat back and waited. They weren’t expectingme to come. I was just playing as hard as I could and I just read the play andas I hit the layup I knew the crowd was going to go crazy. I like it when thecrowd goes nuts. I play with a lot of emotion. I like getting the crowd going.I like getting the crowd into the game.”

Rosano provided his team with a burst of energy all gamelong.

He scored 17 points and had fun out there for sure whilemaking some pretty plays.

One of those pretty plays came with time running out in thefirst half. He took the ball the full length of the court and scored a layupright before the halftime buzzer sounded.

As Rosano hustled over to the locker room, he stopped by thestudent section and did a little chest bumping with his fellow senior and NorthReading golfer Mike Enright.

He’s one of my good friends,” Rosano said. “I always tell myfriends that I’ll give them love at the games because they always show up andthey always cheer for me. When they get excited for me, I like to give themlove back.”

North Reading was able to build an 18-point lead early inthe third quarter by playing some quality full-court pressure defense, sparkedby both Rosano and Dionne.

“What drives me, and I know most kids on the team, is theatmosphere in the gym,” Dionne said. “A lot of our fans came out for this game,a big home state tournament game and that’s kind of what drives us. It drove methrough the whole game and that’s why our pressure was great in the first halfand we were able to get those steals.”
