NEWTON — The Methuen offense may be peaking at just the right time.

At least it seemed that way Wednesday afternoon when the Rangers blasted Newton North 10-1 in the Division 1 North quarterfinals and, by so doing, got a monkey off their back.

"They knocked us out of the tournament six of the last seven years so this feels good," said Methuen coach Jason Smith.

This time, there was no doubt about the outcome from the outset as the Rangers (18-4) scored a pair of runs in the first inning, scored in every inning but one and collected a season-high 18 hits.

Cori Rizzo got things started in the first with a two-run double, one of five hit by the Rangers on the day. One of those was by winning pitcher Jillian McCoy, who also had a three-run homer in the third.

Nyah Mazzone also had a double and was 4 for 4 while Rizzo, Claudia Crowe and McCoy all had at least two hits.

McCoy, meanwhile, was masterful from the circle, throwing a three-hitter and striking out 12. Newton North's lone run came in the bottom of the seventh.

The Rangers will now face No. 1 seed and MVC foe Lowell (21-1-), weather permitting, Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Martin Field. When the team played way back on April 17, Lowell won 1-0, but the Rangers' offense has heated up significantly since then.
