Whittier didn't get the breaks Monday in its Division 2 quarterfinal matchup with Wakefield, dropping a tough 2-1 decision to Wakefield.
Matt Michel pitched a gem for the Wildcats, striking out eight while scattering six hits, but Wakefield scored the only runs it needed on a delayed steal and a throwing error.
The Wildcats scored their only run in the second on an RBI double by Aidan Shea. Joey Santiago had two of Whittier's seven hits and the Wildcats had a runner thrown out at the plate in the fourth on a play that head coach Joe Boland felt was not the correct call.
"We felt our kid was safe but I don't want to harp on that," said Boland, whose club finished a fine season with a 15-4 record. "It was a great game and we had a very good season. We had some goodseniors and I'm going to miss them."
