NORTH ANDOVER — The formula to beat perennial wrestling power Timberlane is pretty straightforward.

You’d better win the toss-up matches.

Because of a precocious freshman for the Owls, as well as two much improved seniors, that didn’t happen Thursday night at the North Andover Middle School. The result was a convincing 48-23 Timberlane victory over North Andover.

The win lifted Timberlane to 6-0. It was the Owls’ 30th straight win dating back to the 2016-17 season and kept them unbeaten over the Scarlet Knights since the rivalry began six years ago.

“A lot of things had to go our way and they didn’t,” said North Andover coach Carl Cincotta. “We needed to win at 106, 120 and 145.”

At 106, undersized Owl freshman Konrad Parker took on another promising freshman in Jayden Gabin. Gabin took a quick 2-0 lead but Parker recovered quickly to take a 5-2 lead into the second period and then got a pin at the 3:11 mark.

“There was a lot of pressure, and I didn’t know what to expect but once I got on top, I felt a lot better and I thought I would win,” said Parker.

With the meet starting at 182 pounds, Parker’s win put the Owls ahead 18-9. But, after Knights’ freshman Carson Milovanovic recorded a major decision at 113 pounds, it was 18-13 and still within reach for North Andover.

Enter toss-up No. 2, at 120, Timberlane’s Nick Roeger against North Andover’s Jamil Nickerson. Roeger was effective as a 106-pounder last year, but he looks much more confident and fluid at 120.

“I’ve been working hard and feel a lot stronger this year,” said Roeger. “I knew it was going to be close so I wanted to push the pace.”

The first period ended in a scoreless deadlock but Roeger took control in the second frame with a near fall and eventually prevailed with a 6-4 decision, putting Tmberlane ahead, 21-13.

‘“I felt pretty good about it and I thought it might be a turning point for the team,” said Roeger.

Indeed, the Owls won four of the next five matches, including at 145 where Antonio Pallaria pulled ahead in the second period against the dangerous Eli Tuttle, who had 29 pins each of the last two years, and nailed down a solid 7-2 decision.

“I thought Antonio was very impressive,” said Timberlane coach Barry Chooljian. “I’m sure that’s one weight they thought they would win.

“This was a very satisfying win against a good team. I thought our kids were ready. I was confident that we’d wrestle well and they’d need a great night to beat us.”

Sophomore Nick Pallaria followed his older brother with a pin at 152 pounds and 170-pounder Mitch Hammond capped off the meet with a pin at 170.

Earlier in he meet, after falling behind 9-0, 220-pounder Chris Lund responded with a 49-second pin.

Heavyweight Marcos Colon also had a 49-second pin to put the Owls ahead to stay. Other winners for Timberlane were defending New England champion Connor McGonagle, with a pin at 132 pounds, and Brent Seavey, who had a second-period fall at 138.

Knight highlights

For North Andover, Michael Coles started the evening on a high note with a pin at 170 and senior standout CJ Cincotta had a pin at 160. Joey Valentino settled for a major decision at 126 and Will Schimmoeller recorded a tough 7-5 decision at 182.

Hurting the Knights’ cause was  that 195-pound standout Ryan McCarthy was out due to illness.

“That definitely hurt,” said coach Cincotta. “But we still would have needed some things to happen to win tonight.”
