BOSTON — Haverhill senior Jayla Kitchings beat a star-studded field to win the girls 55-meter hurdles Saturday at the All-State Meet at the Reggie Lewis Center.

In the finals, she broke the tape in 8.43 to nip a pair of superb sophomores, Brookline’s Jamie Chamberlain (8.45) and North Reading’s Katelyn Gorgonyi (8.46).

Kitchings was the No. 2 seed behind Central’s brilliant sophomore Katharine Duren, who lives on the same street in Haverhill as Kitchings. But Duren hit a hurdle in the finals and placed eighth.

Duren had run an all-time area record 8.35 to Division 2 States while Kitchings won Division 1 in a personal best 8.41.

Mike Maguire ran at Haverhill in the mid-’80s and has been coaching at his alma mater for nearly 30 years. He believes Kitchings is the first Hillie girl trackster to win an All-State title.

“The All-State Meet started in 1985. Natasha Stevenson, the Stabiles (Rebecca and Samantha) never won one,” said Maguire, reeling off the names of some legendary Hillies. “She was nervous all week and feeling pressure. I told her to just run the race and see how it plays out.

“Seeds and past performances are great things to look at but you have to run the race. I’m so proud of how well she’s matured and developed over these four years.”

North Andover senior Trevor Nassar took sixth in the 300 and ran on the fifth place 4x400 team with Jack Chace, Matthew Chicko and Peter Coufos. The Scarlet Knight jumpers fared well with Tyler Glendon fourth in the long jump and Andy Robie seventh in the high jump.

Andover senior Alec Pascoe placed eighth in the hurdles.

Silver forMethuen 4x400

There were some fine performances in the relays with Methuen tying for the 12th fastest all-time in the area (indoor and outdoor) with a 3:23.96 to place second in the 4x400. The Rangers foursome of Eric Salvo, Max Fotino, Stanley Hanci and Roan Marcano edged Needham by 0.003 seconds (3:23.955 to 3:23.958).

They also shattered the MHS indoor mark.

Lawrence’s Alex Suarez, Anderson Santos, Axel Ortiz and Jerimil German took seventh in the 4x200.

Barbanti’s Bronze Age

Senior Delia Barbanti placed third in the 300 and helped Andover to a third in the 4x200. She was joined on the relay by Julia Sergeant, Grace Dunn and Julianna Kennedy.

Andover frosh Jodi Parrott took seventh in the long jump.

Methuen senior Sara Fragione broke her own school record with a 3:00.01 for eighth in the 1,000.

North Andover’s Sarah Lavery (tie for 3rd, 5-6) and Pentucket’s Madi Krohto (tied for 7th, 5-4) placed in the high jump.

North Andover’s Courtney Dalke, twins Kelcey and Ainsley Dion and Aisling Callahan placed third in the 4x800 in 9:26.68. That’s third all-time in the area and just off the school record of 9:24.44 set in the spring of 2007 by a quartet led by the great Kirsten Kasper.
