METHUEN — It was a long time coming but capturing the Division 1 state title at 145 pounds Saturday was worth the wait for Methuen senior Matt Cabezas Saturday afternoon.

"It feels great to finally win it," said Cabezas, who missed the last two state meets with injuries."

It wasn't easy.

Wrestling against Springfield Central standout Cquari Bacote, Cabezas got a quick takedown and then led 4-0 after the first period. He extended his lead to 5-0 after the second period but Bacote came at him hard in the third period and Cabwezas held on for a 5-2 win to improve to 25-0 on the year.

Following the match, an obviously winded Cabezas lay on his back recovering for a good 10 minutes.

"I'm still working on my cardio," said Cabezas. "That was a tough match. But I'm feeling confident going into All-State."

Cabezas was the only local Division 1 state champ but it was a nevertheless a strong meet for local teams. Haverhill had three runners-up and advanced five to All-State next weekend at St. John's Prep while finishing third overall, Methuen came in seventh and Lawrence finished eighth.

Finishing second for the Hillies were Ben Davoli (106), Jake Nicolosi (138) and Sam prescott (160). Davoli (44-5) lost to Chelmsford's Evan Kinney for the third time this year, Nicolosi (45-4) fell to St. John's Prep's Ryan Garlitz for the second straight week and Prescott (36-3) fell to Springfield Central star Cesar Alvan.

Garlitz, who remains unbeaten at 50-0, was named the tourney Outstanding Wrestler after his 11-3 defeat of Nicolosi, but the Haverhill junior battled all the way and was the more aggressive late in the match.

For Methuen, Jarmany Colon was the runner-up at 126, losing a well-fought 8-4 decision in the finals, while Jose Diaz was fourth at 170 and CJ Brown was sixth at 160. Colon is now 33-2 on the year.

Lawrence was paced by heavyweight Brandon Santell, who is now 52-3 after losing in the finals to Xaverian's Grant Laws for the second straight week, while Eric Sanchez was fourth at 182, Luis Mauricio was fifth at 106 and Jon Velilla was fifth at 220.

Andover got fifth from Kelvin Davila (152) and Sean Ballou (170) and a sixth from heavyweight Sean Coyle.

Springfield Central breezed to the title with 199.5 points, far ahead of runner-up Mansfield (113). Haverhill (106.5) edged Shawsheen for third while Methuen came in seventh and Lawrence took eighth.
