LAWRENCE - No one would blame you if you thought Anthony Caggianelli was already looking ahead to winter track.

After all, he showed great form when he hurdled a Lawrence defender during the first quarter of Wednesday night's Thanksgiving rivalry game, and the Central Catholic senior did finish seventh in the area with a 15.34 in the 100-meter hurdle last spring.

But you would still be wrong.

Wednesday night, all Caggianelli was focused on was ending his high school football career with a win.

He got his wish.

Thanks in part to Caggianelli's two touchdowns and 130 all-purpose yards, Central Catholic finished atop the MVC Large and ended its season on a high note after beating Lawrence, 39-12. Wednesday was the fourth installment of the crosstown Thanksgiving rivalry, and the Raiders remained perfect in the series in front of approximately 500 fans.

In fact, Central has won 21 straight games total over Lawrence dating back to 1985.

"I came around the corner and he was right there in front of me so I went for the hurdle," said Caggianelli, who lives in Pelham. "It was great to end the season like this. I'm just happy to do it with the group of kids that I did it with."

After the game, Central (8-3) gave its MVP trophy - the Michael Sullivan Award - to senior co-captain Joe Howshan. It was well-deserved. He broke a 65-yard touchdown on the first play of the third quarter, and also blocked a punt that resulted in a safety.

A Lawrence native himself, Howshan was taking everything in after the game.

"It meant a lot to me," said Howshan of being named MVP. "I love Central. I love my whole team. I feel like it's more of a team award. We did so good tonight I don't want to take all of the credit. But I was happy that all of my hard work has paid off and it didn't go unrecognized."

Senior quarterback Aidan Gordon played most of the game for Central and threw for 100 yards and two touchdowns. One of those scores was a 53-yard screen to Caggianelli, while the other was a 15-yard strike to senior Cam Boes for the game's first score.

Defensively, Howshan, fellow senior co-captain Mike LeFebre and stellar linebacker Lewy Baez-Troncoso led an effort that held the Lancers to just 140 total yards.

"I'm very proud of them for what they've done all season," said Central coach Chuck Adamopoulos. "They've come a long way. We won the league outright tonight, which was important to us. We had the great win over Everett. We made it to the North finals. It's been a very gratifying season."

Lawrence (2-8) played tough on defense, and only trailed 19-6 at the half.

Brandon Santell once again led the effort defensively for the Lancers, and found the end zone on a 1-yard plunge in the fourth quarter. He was voted Lawrence's MVP, and received the Robert Fitzgerald Award.

Fellow seniors Justin Olivero, Miguel Roman, Anthony Garcia and Marc Wilmo all played well for Lawrence.

"I'm very proud of the fight," said Lawrence coach Rhandy Audate. "The fight wasn't just here, the fight was in the classroom. The fight was coming to school every day, coming to practice all of the time. And while we weren't perfect, I do believe we got better."

It was a proper send off for a Central senior class that accomplished more than most anticipated - mainly, beating Everett in the Division 1 North semifinals.

"I'm very proud," said Howshan. "Especially because before the season we weren't in the picture and no one was thinking we were going to win the MVC. No one thought we were going to make it to the North finals and we had a lot of guys step up.

"Coach A was telling us that we overachieved this year, and I'm happy for everyone."
