DERRY — A wild scene broke out at the end of the Pinkerton at Londonderry boys lacrosse game early Tuesday evening.

Police, a firetruck and an ambulance responded to the field after an altercation broke out.

A Londonderry fan, who another fan said was a parent, had been taunting and making obscene gestures toward a group of Pinkerton parents and fans throughout the game.

A Pinkerton supporter and the man appeared to fight and both went to the ground.

Other parents and fans broke the two up.

The game was completed but the teams were rushed off the field.

Pinkerton won the game against its archrival, 13-6.

The Eagle-Tribune called and texted Pinkerton head boys lacrosse coach and athletic director Brian O’Reilly.

He texted back: “I did not see it.”

Derry police said the incident is under investigation and no details would be released Tuesday night.

Pinkerton wins big

Pinkerton won its third game in a row, a physical, grueling affair against its crosstown rival, Londonderry.

The Astros jumped out early and never looked back, expanding on its six-goal halftime lead for a 13-6 win. It was the third straight game the Astros (3-0) have held a team to under double-digit goals.

“It’s a rivalry game, so we just wanted to maintain our composure,” said Astros coach Brian O’Reilly. “We wanted to make sure we didn’t get involved in out-toughing the other team, just playing the way we play.”

Using a strong man-to-man defense, the Astros chased the Lancers offense down and forced turnovers and failed clears at every turn.

Alex Sturgess made seven saves in net, four of them coming in the opening frame when the Astros were establishing their lead.

It took both teams time to adjust to the tough field conditions, with chunks of mud coming undone around the Londonderry crease. Turnovers plagued the Astros, but their stingy ride kept possessions going.

“Pretty tough field conditions today,” said O’Reilly. “I thought about not playing today, it was my call. I walked the field this morning, it was pretty muddy on the back. I was hoping it would dry out and it didn’t the way I like it. It was kind of a rugged game.”

Gennaro Marra scored the first goal halfway through the opening frame, opening the floodgates for the Astros. Owen McCormack and Ryan Auger followed with goals of their own for the 3-0 lead.

The Lancers (2-1) responded off the stick of Nate Andrews with 3:14 left in the first and it seemed to spark the visitors. Two tallies from Mike Niedenfield and one from Jake Holland cut the lead to 6-4 in the second period.

That’s when the game took a turn to the physical.

The teams traded checks in their clear attempts, leading to turnovers in a choppy start to the second frame. Auger took over with two tallies on the edge of the crease, and the Astros took control with a 9-4 lead.

Lancers’ goalie Patrick Murphy took a penalty, forcing their backup to come off the bench cold. Chad Teresky netted his first of the day with an open look at the goal line extended to make it a 10-4 lead headed into the half.

The game stayed that way until late in the fourth quarter, when both teams tallied a couple more times to close the contest.

Auger finished the day with four goals and an assist, while Teresky had two tallies.

“Let’s just chalk this game up, it’s a W, let’s leave it at that,” said O’Reilly. “We have a number of things to work on.”
