STONEHAM — It took less than four minutes for North Andover to set the tone Tuesday night.
Just 1:43 into the opening frame, T.J. Fredo found the back of the net. Less than two minutes later, Fredo fed Zach Keating on a 2-on-1 break to open up a two-goal lead before the Fishermen even knew what hit them.
The Scarlet Knights never trailed on the night en route to a dominant 7-3 win over Gloucester at the Stoneham Arena.
With the Division 2 North first-round win, No. 8 North Andover improves to 13-7-2 and advances to the quarterfinals against the winner of Wednesday’s game between No. 1 Danvers and No. 16 North Reading.
“We had a bunch of guys not feeling well so we needed secondary scoring tonight,” North Andover head coach Peter Marfione said. “The first two goals were from out second line. Fredo really stepped up and did a lot for us tonight, he even played a little defense because we were shorthanded there.”
North Andover took that 2-0 lead into the second period, and it was the Fishermen who came out of the first intermission on fire.
John John Mondello put No. 9 Gloucester (10-7-4) on the board just 13 seconds into the frame.
Gloucester pressed for the tying goal in the ensuing minutes, but junior goalie Jack Walsh made several big stops, including an impressive blocker save on Gloucester forward Chris Noyes, who was trying to pick the top corner of the goal.
“Walsh was at his best after Gloucester made it 2-1,” Marfione said. “They get the tying goal and it’s a completely different game.”
Instead of Gloucester scoring the tying goal, North Andover took back momentum and essentially put the game away with the next five goals on the game.
Three-and-a-half minutes after Mondello’s goal, Matt Lucy weaved through the Gloucester defense broke in all alone, scoring on a nifty backhand shot to make it 3-1.
Later in the frame, the Scarlet Knights scored three times in six minutes to take a 6-1 lead into the final period of play. Lucy struck again with another incredible individual effort, skating out of the corner and scoring on a backhand shot while skating away from the goal to make it 4-1. Lucy added a pair of assists to his two goals on the night.
Jake Sitak scored less than two minutes later and Shaun McKay tipped in a Tyler Buonopane shot to make it a five-goal game.
Keating scored his second of the night early in the third before Gloucester scored the last two of the game in the final five minutes.
