PLAISTOW — You certainly couldn't fault the effort.

Playing a first-round Division 2 opener against Milford.the Owls played sound defense, outrebounded the visiting Spartans and got more than their share of loose balls.

But, when it mattered, the ball just wouldn't go in the basket, the result beinga tough 53-48 overtime loss that knocks them out of the tournament.

Tied 37-37 heading into the fourth quarter, Timberlane was just 1 for 16 from the floor in the final frame and 0 for 8 in overtime. When it came to near misses and balls rolling around and out, the Owls put on an unfortunate clinic.

"We played hard but missed a lot of crucial shots," said Timberlane coach Jeff Baumann. "They just wouldn't fall for us."

The Owls did shoot the ball effectively in the first quarter, connecting on 5 of 9 shots while taking a 14-9 lead and they were proficient in the third quarter when they staged nice comeback.

Ahead 28-22 at halftime, Milford went on a 9-2 run to open up a comfortable 37-24 lead and seemed to be in total command. But, sparked by six points off the bench from Al Barney and thanks to some good pressure defense, the Owls scored the last 13 points of the quarter to tie the game.

Neither team could get anything going in the fourth quarter, although the Owls had a good chance to win it in regulation.

In overtime, a 3-pouinter by guard Sam Santaniello — his first points of the game — put Milford ((11-8) up for good and the Spartans made 5 of 6 free throws to seal the verdict while the Owls' shooting woes continued.

Connor Schott and Bob Horgan led the Owls (10-9) with 13 points apiece and Sam Hovan added 12 points and 11 rebounds, five coming in the first quarter alone.

"I'm proud of our kids for fighting back," said Baumann. "I thought it was a nice accomplishment to get here and the kids played hard."
