AMESBURY — North Andover had no answer for quarterback Jared Flannigan’s naked bootleg pass-run option, so Amesbury coach Thom Connors pointed out, “so you keep running it.”

The Indians routed North Andover, 37-20, to improve to 2-0 for the first time in recent memory.

The Knights once again were missing their franchise back Zac Iovanella. Coach John Rafferty said the junior back is out with an ankle injury.

Once the Indians had the Scarlet Knight defense spread out, either Jesse Burrell or Kevin Johnston would punish North Andover right up the gut.

“That’s the nature of our offense, and it worked very well for us tonight,” said Connors.

The hosts struck on the opening drive. After three plays and one off-sides on North Andover, the Indians marched the ball 72 yards, with Burrell scoring on a 16-yard run.

After three-and-outs by both teams, North Andover took its turn and marched down the field on eight plays capped off by the first of two touchdown passes from cool freshman quarterback Brandon Walsh to wide receiver Chris Buco. But the Knights missed their two-point try.

Johnston responded with his first of three TDs to cap an impressive drive.

The game-changing play occurred on North Andover’s next possession as Amesbury recovered a fumble on the Knights’ 29.

Sensing blood Amesbury went for the kill, and three plays later made the score 22-6 after a sensational, 8-yard scoring run by Johnston.

North Andover scored twice in the fourth, first on a Ricky Williams 3-yard run with 3:13 left and a 33-yard Walsh to Buco connection in the final minute.

This Thanksgiving day game will be the greatest game of all the Amesbury vs Newburyport games in all past times. The best to both teams. I am rooting for my Indians to go on the war path and win this game, so they can go back to super bowl playoffs and win it all. So go red and white win it for all the past that did not make it. You kids deserve it you have worked hard. Work hard on pass protection. Make it a full team effort and all of Amesbury will be proud of you. AHS 1957
