GROTON — No matter how hard they tried, Phillips could not stop Tony Muse.
The freshman Lawrence Academy back ran wild for over 300 yards and a whooping six touchdowns, leading the Spartans to a commanding 56-7 victory over Phillips in the Kevin Fleming Bowl.
"It was a good season, but we just couldn't stay with those boys," said Phillips coach Leon Modeste, whose team finished 6-3. "Don't get me wrong, they have a great line. But that kid (Muse) is unbelivable."
Just a freshman, Muse entered yesterday second in the ISL with 108 points (18 TD's). He wasted no time padding those stats, breaking off touchdown runs of 21, 17 and 5 yards in the first quarter alone. He added TD runs of 4 and 86 yards to put Lawrence Academy (9-0) ahead 49-0 at halftime.
Muse finished his day with a 50-yard TD, his sixth of the day, midway through the third quarter.
Phillips' lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a 6-yard run from Anthony Antonucci.
"It was a good year. We hadn't made it to a bowl game in four years," said Modeste. "Lawrence is a good team. But I'm proud of our guys for how they have fought and played all season."
