No. 7 Salem made No. 2 Timberlane work for it but the once-beaten Owls prevailed in straight sets (25-12, 25-22, 25-20) to advance to the state volleyball semifinals Thursday against No. 6 Windham, which upset Bishop Guertin.
Owls coach John Dube said, "We fully expected Salem to be scrappy and athletic. The third time (against a team) is always the hardest one. They fought right to end. It was a good match for us. We played very solid."
Sean Hovan is always dangerous on offense but Dube said "he played great defense."
Ryan Doherty and Al Barney shined in the middle.
For the 9-9 Blue Devils, Nick Hayes and Alex Stift had seven kills each.
