WEST NEWBURY – Pentucket pulled off a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over the Georgetown Royals in extra innings.

It was a wild ninth.

Georgetown left fielder Jake Irons had an incredible leaping catching in the ninth to rob Jacob Deziel of a potential walk off home run.

But the Royal excitement was short-lived. With two outs and two men on, shortstop Kiernan Haley drove in the game winning RBI double to close the game 3-2 for the Sachems.

The Royals led 2-1 for the majority of the ballgame, thanks to an RBI double by sophomore third baseman Kyle Greenler in the second, and a sacrifice fly by senior first baseman Peter Bovio in the fourth.

Georgetown also got a big boost from pitcher and senior captain Ritchie Gray, both on the mound and at the plate. Gray threw 99 pitches and struck out seven on the day. He also went 4-4, walking away with three singles, one double, one stolen base, and a pair of runs.

Unfortunately, Gray was forced to exit the game in the ninth inning with what was preliminarily diagnosed on the field as a broken finger on his throwing hand. Gray injured the finger when he attempted to catch a ball barehanded.

The Sachems found themselves in a 2-1 hole in the bottom of seventh inning, due to an RBI in the third from Cam Wolbach. With their backs against the wall, head coach Tom L’Italien had some choice words for his squad in the dugout prior to the start of the inning.Georgetown left fielder Jake Irons had an incredible leaping catching in the ninth to rob Jacob Deziel of a potential walk off home run.

But the Royal excitement was short-lived. With two outs and two men on, shortstop Kiernan Haley drove in the game winning RBI double to close the game 3-2 for the Sachems.

“Let’s find a way to get on base, find a way to put a little bit of pressure on these guys, and let’s see if we can find a way to push a run across,” said L’Italien. “When you get to the seventh inning you can’t be too concerned about the result of it. You just have to focus on the process of getting a guy on, getting a bunt down, getting a big hit and just try and perform our best when it matters most.”

The Sachems responded to the call with a sacrifice fly by left fielder Ryan DePaolo, allowing catcher Jackson McKean to score the tying run by just barely beating the tag at home plate.

Pentucket’s Andrew Noyes relieved starting pitcher Jimmy Cleary in the middle of the eighth, going on to strike out three and getting the win.
