ANDOVER | A Warrior "stinker," enhanced by a Tewksbury lineup laden with voracious bats, ended any chance of perfection in the Merrimack Valley Conference.

Ranked No. 1 in Eastern Mass, the Redmen took it to Andover from the opening pitch at Aumais Field, 12-4, handing the Warriors their first conference loss.

"Everyone's going to have a stinker, ours came at the wrong time," said Andover coach Ken Maglio. "We had ours against a good team like Tewksbury."

The Redmen, behind junior righty Ronnie Wallace, pounced on Andover for six runs in the first, with five hits and one gigantic error.

Wallace, who went six strong allowing two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts, had all he would need.

Andover starter John Farrell, who came into the game with a 1.17 ERA over his first two starts, never found his comfort zone, lasting just an inning plus two hitters. He allowed seven runs, three earned as the Warriors committed four errors in the first 12 at-bats.

Senior Ryan Walsh, summoned from the bullpen, went the final five and kept things from truly getting out of hand.
Andover, with two hits through five innings, finally rattled the baseball a bit with two runs apiece in the sixth and seventh, but by that time the outcome had long been decided.

John Hennessy continued to swing a hot bat, going 2 for 3 to make it 11 for 20 on the year.

Sam Clark chipped in an RBI base hit. Zach Burdeau added a pair of singles and has now hit safely in all six games.

Suddenly, Friday morning's road date at Lowell takes on a bit more importance.

"If we beat Lowell, this one is forgotten," said Maglio, whose club is now tied with Central Catholic at the top of the MVC large, each team having one loss. "This league is balanced. If your pitcher comes through, everybody has a chance to beat anybody. Teams are going to lose. I'd say 10-3 wins the MVC large. That's what we're shooting for."

The Warriors fall to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the league.
