Hillies rout Malden in opener

MALDEN — Even with record-setting Eagle-Tribune All-Star Chance Brady in the backfield, Haverhill head coach Tim O’Connor was worried about his run game heading into this season.

The reason?

The Hillies graduated four members of their offensive line last year, and this year’s group features four brand new players, including a pair of sophomores.

Following yesterday’s game, it seems he shouldn’t have been as worried.

Brady was back to his prolific self, rushing for 255 yards and four touchdowns, while the new-look line received the game ball from O’Connor following Haverhill’s 42-12 rout over Malden.

“Going into the year (the offensive line) was a question mark, I won’t lie to you,” O’Connor said. “They’re getting better each and every day, but we ride them though. We have two really great coaches working with them and their technique is getting much better and I’m proud of their effort and hard work.”

The Hillies also showed off sophomore Jordan Javier, a new weapon for senior quarterback Tommy Morgan. Javier, 6-foot-3 wide receiver who transferred from Lynn English last year, caught four passes including a second quarter touchdown from Morgan.

“He’s the real deal,” O’Connor said. “He’s a great weapon and not only is he tall, but he can stretch the field, too.”

Haverhill will open its home schedule against MVC opponent Tewksbury on Friday.

Odds and ends

A scary moment in the second quarter when Malden offensive lineman Darrian DaSilvia was taken off the field on a stretcher with his helmet still on and secured to the gurney. As the stadium began to give him a round of applause while medial staff was wheeling him to a waiting ambulance, DaSilvia raised his left arm and the stadium exploded. ... Mother Nature was a factor, particularly early, as storm clouds began to gather overhead and howling winds were visibly affecting passing. One incomplete pass by Morgan in the first quarter sailed 10 feet past Javier as the ball was picked up in a gust. ...

After Brady’s fourth touchdown he appeared slightly shaken up. While being attended to by the Hillies’ trainer, a member of the Malden chain gang asked his counterpart “you think he’s hurt?” His partner joked, “He’s exhausted. You run the length of this field four times while breaking tackles and tell me how you feel!” Brady returned, unfazed, for the next series. ... Haverhill senior Curtis Robart made a highlight-reel sack in the fourth quarter. As Malden’s left-handed quarterback Jake Martino dropped back looking down the left side of the field, Robart beat his blocker and crushed the Tornadoes’ QB from the blind side.
