Odds and ends: After finishing 4-16 the previous two seasons, Royals notched their most wins since 1993 (15-7). ... The DeGenovas, Gina and Maria, are identical twins but coach BarriAnn Alonzo says they are easy to tell apart...The O'Briens, Courtney and Kelli, are sisters....Alonzo had a daughter in the offseason. Eva is now eight months old. On Jan. 2 the coach will return to her duties as a Spanish teacher at Georgetown High. ... Two years ago the Royals had six freshmen and last year it was 11 sophomores on the varsity. ... Co-captain Julie Fehlmann is in the National Honor Society.

Coach BarriAnn Alonzo (5th year, 34-53): "We're very excited. All of the starters have been with me since they were freshmen. Our plan is to be the team to beat, to win all the games in our division (CAL Small). I definitely see us making a run in the state tourney, we should go further than last year. Taryn is a hustler, she gets a lot of her points the hard way. Julie is our most versatile player. She'll be playing point guard because Gina DeGenova (hairline fracture) is out ... she's hoping to be back in early January."
